This is especially detrimental for those with autism and down syndrome, and it is not uncommon for clients with these conditions to need further care as they prepare for going to college, entering the workforce, and becoming active members of their community.

With these needs in mind, we have expanded our services to provide care for adults and teens on a case-by-case basis. The therapy services offered to this demographic include speech and occupational therapy. We also provide myofunctional therapy to adults on a case-by-case basis.

Support programs and therapies do exist that have been precisely tailored to suit the needs of teenagers and older kids with autism. These are geared to recognize the mismatches between the chronological age and cognitive abilities present in these populations. For instance, a 13-year-old patient with autism may have an emotional and behavioral status of nine years of age.

Therapies in this realm assist kids in attaining the skills and habits necessary to build self-esteem and establish social connections with others. They also help adolescents in the areas of mood regulation and appropriate interactions with peers.

Every teen & adult should have the opportunity to live their life to the fullest.

Frequently Asked Questions

The broader umbrella of mental health encompasses how you feel, act, and think in various scenarios. Teenagers often experience mental health issues during times when their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors interfere with the functions of daily life.

All people have periods when they are unhappy with the way things are or how others interact with them, and there is nothing abnormal about that. However, when undesirable feelings and emotions produce real obstacles regularly, a mental health problem may need addressing.

Social Skills training is an area designed to help teens and children learn how to interpret social cues that are non-verbal in nature, including

  • body language,
  • eye contact,
  • facial expressions,
  • and tone of voice.

This type of training helps develop skills involved with understanding other people's opinions and perspectives and develops the traits needed to solve problems in the social realm and grasp emotional rules.

Parents or caregivers who are worried that their teen on the spectrum is suffering from depression should begin by initiating a conversation about that child's current mood. Some ASD-affected teens will have the capacity to put into words the way they feel, while some may face challenges in this respect. Some teens with ASD may indicate that they are bored, fatigued, or hungry. Parents whose concerns persist may wish to speak to a mental health professional or a pediatrician who can investigate further and suggest treatment options.

Preparing a teen for this type of evaluation is a wise course of action. It is best to explain that the visit is designed to help come up with a course of treatment that will help them feel happier. Assessments of this sort will likely encompass a mood evaluation, discussions about recently stressful situations or changes in routine, a medical history review, and more.
